We use soy wax in our handmade candles. Soy wax is a vegetable wax made from the oil of soy beans. It is natural, renewable and environmentally friendly as it burns clean and is sustainable. It is 100% biodegradable.

After harvesting the soy beans, they are cleaned, de-hulled and rolled into flakes allowing the oil to be extracted and hydrogenated. This changes some of the fatty acids from unsaturated to saturated which in turn changes the melting point of the oil allowing it to be solid at room temperature. In addition, the leftover husks do not go to waste, as they are used in animal feed.

There are many differing opinions about paraffin wax, but Faerie Fire believe that soy wax is a healthier alternative. Paraffin wax is a bi-product of the refinery process for petroleum oil and is non renewable. We believe that soy wax has lower soot levels that help maintain purer air quality.

The introduction of soy wax into the handmade candles industry has enabled the clean burning of candles and has introduced a growing new market for farmers. Although soy burns with minimal soot, there are other reasons a candle might give off soot such as burning for too long, not trimming the wick or leaving the candle in a draught. The only truly soot free flame comes from a natural gas flame. You can relax in the knowledge that any soot coming from a soy candle comes from the wick (we only use those made from paper and cotton), fragrance or dye.

Yes, you might find soy wax more expensive than paraffin wax, but we believe the benefits to your health and the environment far outweigh the cost difference. Moving forward in the 21st century, we believe that soy wax and indeed other natural waxes will become the wax of choice. Soy also has the added value of a lower melting point which in turn allows for longer burning times and an even scent throw which is always a benefit!
